Participation, a manner of understanding and approaching the relation between the Triune God and Christian believers, has been topical from the Patristic period on till today. The  interest in this topic was kept alive through contributions from a wide range of scholars – Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Reformed theologians alike – who all approached this from different perspectives.

Dr Hans Boersma (J. I. Packer Professor of Theology from Regent College), who was a researcher in residence in Kampen for one year, also made major contributions to this topic, e.g. in his book Heavenly Participation. The Weaving of a Sacramental Tapestry.

Several other researchers at the Theological University have contributed to the topic as well: Dr Hans Burger in his book Being in Christ, Dr Wolter Huttinga in his dissertation Participation and Communicability and PhD candidate Dima Bintsarovskyi in his preparatory work for his dissertation on the ‘knowability’ of God in the theologies of Herman Bavinck and John Meyendorff.

As Dr Hans Boersma will be in Kampen for a short visit, the research groups Biblical Exegesis and Systematic Theology of the TU Kampen and TU Apeldoorn will be organizing an Expert Meeting on Participation. Four presentations will be followed by a round table discussion between the participants and the lecturers.

  1. Dr Hans Boersma - An Enchanted Universe: Participation in Patristic Thought
  2. Dr Hans Burger -  Systematic Reflections on Participation in dialogue with Paul and John
  3. Dr Wolter Huttinga - Participation as the cross-shaped tension between ascent and descent
  4. Drs Dima Bintsarovskyi – Participation: Similarities and Differences between a Reformed and an Eastern Orthodox Perspective
