Church and Participation: What Local Congregations Can Learn From the Ontmoetingskerk
This study involves ethnographic research in a church in Amersfoort-Vathorst, called the ‘Ontmoetingskerk’ (Encounter Church). The Ontmoetingskerk is part of a new initiative called ‘Hart van Vathorst’ (Heart of Vathorst), in which some disability agencies, a day care center for children and a church share a roof. The aim of the initiative is that they will not only share this roof, but also their lives. My research strives to find out if and in what ways this goal is reached and what that means for the life of the congregation. Other congregations could benefit from these results in their struggle to find their place and relevance within their context.
